Full Alloy Wheel Refurbishment – Restoring Wheels to Their Original Integrity
Precision Restoration for Maximum Performance and Aesthetics
At Wheel Collision, our comprehensive five-step alloy wheel refurbishment process restores wheels to their original condition at a fraction of the cost of replacement. This meticulous process ensures structural integrity, safety, and a flawless finish, making it the preferred choice for vehicle owners who demand high-quality restoration.
Our state-of-the-art refurbishment centres in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Pretoria are equipped with advanced X-ray technology and patented wheel straightening machinery, ensuring every wheel meets our exacting safety and quality standards.
How Does the Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Process Work?
Step 1 – Assessment
- Comprehensive inspection to identify damage, cracks, or buckles
- Removal of valves and weights, with replacements fitted later
- X-ray scanning to detect hidden structural issues
- Assessment of repair feasibility and necessary procedures
Safety First: If a wheel is deemed unsafe, we will advise on the best course of action to maintain roadworthiness.
Step 2 – Stripping & Preparation
- Wheels are placed in a chemical stripping tank (non-acidic) to remove old primer, paint, and lacquer
- High-pressure cleaning to eliminate any residual contaminants
- Degassing process (heated to 180-200°C) to remove trapped air
- First X-ray inspection to identify any previously unseen structural damage
This step ensures a contaminant-free, smooth surface for the next stage of refurbishment.
Step 3 – Welding & Structural Repairs (If Required)
- TIG welding used to fill missing metal—no fillers are used
- Machining & hand-sanding for a seamless finish
- Multiple-angle X-ray analysis to detect any hidden cracks
- If structural integrity is compromised, we will advise on necessary corrective measures
Only wheels that meet our safety standards proceed to the next step.
Step 4 – Cosmetic Refinishing & Colour Matching
- Wheels are heated for 30 minutes to eliminate trapped air
- A powder primer coating is applied for durability & corrosion resistance
- Custom colour matching & bespoke finishes applied by expert technicians
- High-quality lacquer coat applied for maximum durability
Choose from a variety of finishes—see our Wheel Colour Change options for customisation.
Step 5 – Final Quality Inspection & Delivery
- Comprehensive multi-angle X-ray inspection (30–40 scans) to verify structural integrity
- Final visual quality control to ensure a flawless finish
- Wheels are either refitted onto the vehicle or prepared for customer collection
Customers can drop off wheels at any of our Full Refurbishment Centres or Xpress Repair Centres, where we offer collection services by arrangement.
